E=mc2 as a Poem by Bill McDonough

The sun shines on the earth's mass and life happens!
If we follow nature's law, then growth is good.

Suddenly I saw Einstein as a poet. 'E' is the sun, its physics, its energy. And 'm' is the earth, and its mass, and its chemistry. And you put the two together its 'c2' and magic happens, biology, the thing that Einstein didn't deal with, the thing that scientists can't explain, the first single photosynthetic cell, who can explain that? When did life appear? How does that happen? What is that spark that separates the mass molecule and the energetic electron and becomes this thing, that starts to divide and then learn to have sex and then there's us, sentient spiritual creatures wondering this earth. What an astonishing work of magic!

Well all the sudden growth is good, that's interesting! Because if the sun shines on the earth's mass, a tree grows. A tree that grows is good, a child that grows is good. So growth is good. And so the debate that's going on today about growth, no growth is suspicious argument, because the real question is what do you want to grow? So if you follow nature's law, then growth is good. As an architect I have to follow the law of gravity. Its not just a good idea, its the law, right? And so we're just trying to follow nature's laws.
